Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is characterized by wasting of muscles that leads to difficulty moving and premature death, mainly from heart failure. Glucocorticoids are applied in the management of the disease, supporting the hypothesis that inflammation may be driver as well as target. In this seminar, I will discuss the inflammatory mechanisms during progression of cardiac and skeletal muscle dysfunction with a particular focus on the role of the inflammasome in myocardial and skeletal muscle cells.
